Existing intercom systems generally were installed on a 2 wire ‘bus’ system which worked perfectly well for audio only transmissions. The industry has adapted and evolved to now have video over 2 wire systems. This can generally save an expensive and time consuming re-cabling process.
IP based systems now have the ability to interface with other LAN based devices and deliver a higher level connection; eg link intercom with CCTV recorders.
